It blows my mind that we who were once puny worms in the devil’s trophy case have been translated majestically to the place of dominion where our garish rags of self-righteousness are torn away and we are clothed with the righteousness
COMMENTARY ON PSALM 132:9 and ISAIAH 51:6
Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my righteousness will never fail.
There are fabrics in heaven. Unlike the earthly attires which are susceptible to rot, wear and tear, these garments have eternal value. They are sewn from the blood of the lamb. These are the fabrics of faith, love and hope. They are the ones that Christ weaved on the cross at Calvary.
God makes bold claims that border on brashness. He declares that his righteousness will never fail. This is in sharp contrast with the righteousness of man which is likened to a mildew-ridden, bloodied rag. Yahweh confidently asserts in our hearing that the work of salvation will be an eternal element even lasting longer than the earth.
The flashy ornaments of man’s present habitation will fizzle out like smoke and fade into oblivion. Man’s tireless pursuit of knickknacks will lead him to a dead end. There is nothing at the end of this rainbow.
But there is hope – Hope in the pursuit of righteousness, hope in the reality that the tailor of heaven has fabricated a garment of salvation and righteousness. But who is qualified to wear this cloth?
- [Psalm 132:9] Let your priests be clothed with righteousness, and let your saints shout for joy
Peter proclaims with the same zeal that he declared the word of God on the day of Pentecost that we are a royal priesthood, a holy nation. There is a deep sense that the Christian life is a family matter. God is the Father King and we are king-priests. What a family! No need to stare greedily at the so-called rich and famous you belong to a rare breed of creatures, an alien species that occupies the heavenlies and has dominion on the earth.
Have you read Paul’s letter to the church in Corinth? Does it not startle you that we are called the Righteousness of God in Christ Jesus? It blows my mind that we who were once puny worms in the devil’s trophy case have been translated majestically to the place of dominion where our garish rags of self-righteousness are torn away and we are clothed with the righteousness that lasts from eternity past to eternity future. Psalm 132 points us to the critical point in history where our robes are given to us. We are not given the SPIRIT of fear or condemnation. Neither are we told to wear doubt or despair. Rather we are clothed with the velvety robe of victors – Righteousness.
We are anchored to Christ the Solid Rock by hope. We are enjoined to fight the faith-war without worries. We are filled to the brim and beyond with the overflow of love. All this is possible because the Tailor of Heaven designs Righteousness and fits us with it. Our new creation spirit comes factory-fitted with the Righteousness that is not of works. We are marked with indelible ink with the signature of Heaven’s designer that endorses our spirit as perfect and holy. [Ephesians 1:13, 4:24]
Shall we shout for joy today and every day? Are you not excited that you are clothed with eternal riches?
I am excited to be clothed with eternal riches……
