[The Book of Joel] What the locust swarm has left the great locusts have eaten; what the great locusts have left the young locusts have eaten; what the young locusts have left other locusts have eaten.

Carefully tear away the tinfoil of pretence and stare into the blackness that is life. Do you realize that many people are tottering on the edge of despair? Most people who walk the streets are merely zombies with manicured nails and sharply pressed attires. There is no life in us anymore. We try to do it ourselves. We hop from seminar to spa, from hospital to horoscopes. We will try anything and everything in an effort to salvage a bit of sanity.
Total annihilation is the word for the day. Life takes on the appearance of a post-apocalyptic landscape without the green leaf of hope. The swarming locusts of fear and death have surge through and ripped away every shred of vitality from us. All we can do now is parade as masquerades in the marketplace. We can put on church-clothes and play church.
Even in the arena of academics and the formerly impregnable fort of finances we are barraged by an onslaught of locusts that symbolize our fears and weaknesses. We are torn to shreds by our own lusts and licentious lifestyles. Careful scrutiny, deliberate auditing of the account balances of our life will only reveal more bankruptcy.
The truth has been photoshopped. We are victims of broken and bankrupt altars – no prayer, no power. From golden pulpits in great halls of worship built to perfection we hear nothing but an adulterated version of truth watered down by the traditions of men. With our bibles or tablets underneath our arms and without the word engraved on the tables of our hearts we are merely fooling ourselves.
Is there hope?
[The book of Joel] Like dawn spreading across the mountains a large and mighty army comes, such as never was in ancient times nor ever will be in ages to come. Before them fire devours, behind them a flame blazes.
Yes there is!
A generation is rising from the ashen heap of apathy. There is a movement that storms through the gates of hell and liberates the captives. Can you not see the light over the mountains? Can you not smell the scent of the saints? Surely you can feel the tremors of the quivering earth. There is an army that is coming and indeed is here.
They have chosen to STAND UP 4 JESUS. They are cut from the same cloth as Deborah the prophetess who led her nation to victory. They are of the same mould as the three Hebrew boys who stood in defiance before the heathen overlord of Babylon. They are fearless with their forehead harder than adamant [Ezekiel 3:9].A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. These breed are the holy nation spoken of in first Peter. They are scion of Zion hewn from the Spirit of perfection.
They are soldiers of the cross. Firstly because the life that courses through their veins, the blood that imbues them with strength is from the cross. And secondly because they live their lives on this premise – woe is me if I preach not the gospel. The gospel of life is their message and mandate. Just as murderers strap themselves with bombs and weapons to kill, they strap themselves with the gift of life ready at every point to dish life.
They are life-giving spirits. They have the outrageous ability of taking the ‘nothing’ left by the locusts and create a vista of endless supply.
The call is out there. The army is still recruiting. Will you sign up today?
How to sign up
1. Look to the cross.
You are not the accidental product of a cosmic eruption. You did not slink out of a pot of primordial stew. Neither did you sleep as a monkey on Monday and emerge as a man with the new moniker “homo sapiens” on Sunday. You are God’s handiwork, wonderfully and fearfully crafted. Sadly sin crept in and tainted the bloodline. [Romans 3:23. 6:23] In Adam, the first of men, you sinned and thus were destined to a life of separation in your mind. The cross is the beginning of your new salvific history. Here you were crucified with Christ. Here Christ reconciled us to God.
2. Look to the empty tomb
You have a purpose. You were deliberately designed and furnished with a dominion spirit, the same Spirit that coursed through the atrophied bones and muscles of Jesus and caused the Christ to break free from the fetters of death. The empty tomb reminds us daily of the resurrection power of the Spirit. The Spirit that declares us to be justified. Just as if you have never sinned. You are now justified before God. The power and hold of sin over you is broken and you are now clothed with righteousness. [Psalm 132:9]
3. Believe and Speak
I believe therefore I speak. Your voice carries in its grip worlds. There are immense and infinite possibilities in your words. Just as you have turned your eyes upon Jesus and now behold his wonderful face, allow the truth to sink in, allow your heart marinate in it and then make it your daily confession.
Direct the course of your life with your words. You are now One Spirit with Christ by virtue of the perfect work of the cross. You are what Paul calls a new creation no longer subject to the consciousness or consequences of sin.
